WHY H4?
In the eighteenth century, determining longitude at sea remained one of navigation’s greatest challenges. John Harrison devoted decades to creating a timekeeper precise enough to carry a fixed reference time across an ocean.
Completed in 1759, H4 was his fourth marine timekeeper. Unlike the large mechanisms that came before it, H4 resembled an oversized pocket watch and proved that portable precision timekeeping could work at sea.
Its success made time a tool for orientation, confidence and discovery. H4icons takes its name from that same pursuit of precision, persistence and lasting significance.
