Collection records

How to record and review watch collection values.

A collection value is most useful when it has a date, a source and a clear purpose. Acquisition cost, insured value, professional valuation and asking price are not interchangeable.

Keep different value types separate

Record acquisition cost as a historical fact. Store professional valuations with their date and supporting document. Treat an asking price or market observation as a separate field rather than a formal appraisal.

Record the source and date

A number without context becomes difficult to evaluate later. Note who supplied the valuation, when it was made, the currency used and whether it relates to insurance, resale or personal records.

Protect financial information

Acquisition costs, individual valuations and total collection value are sensitive. They should remain private unless the collector deliberately chooses to disclose them.

What H4icons does

H4icons is designed to organize values and supporting records; it does not claim to provide an automatic professional appraisal. Collectors should use qualified specialists when a formal valuation is required.
